Corliss, ¿Qué es?
Floater’s Blog: Ocean Date January 29th 2025
The other day I went out for a quick beer float at one of the beautiful local beaches south of San Juan Del Sur. Quick, because it was too windy, and I was there to introduce this beach to a couple of visitors, so I didn’t want to abandon them for very long. We had visited Playa Hermosa where the waves are usually too big to take an inflatable out through the surf, but this day was the calmest I had ever seen. So, what the heck, I had a fresh Toña, I had to get out for a quickie! That’s why I keep a float in my backpack, duh.
As I fought to keep myself ‘parked’ just past the breakers and avoid from being blown far out into the deep blue sea, I struck up a conversation with a surfer who was waiting for a set of reasonable waves to attempt a ride on. Introductions were first and I was asked as has happened many times before, “What the fak does your name mean? I know that’s a Spanish last name but Corliss, is that Spanish too?”
I guess because my skin is a little dark having spent so much time here, they might think I’m a little bit of a Spanish guy. However just my last name is Spanish and Corliss is old English, in my case from around the Lake District of northern England. Also, I can prove that I’m not Spanish by just lifting the edge of my bathing suit and showing them my lily-white ass.
So, what does Corliss mean? Well, it’s ‘carefree’ and buena vida translates from Spanish to ‘good life’ so my name, Corliss Buenavida means Carefree Goodlife.
There you go, now stop asking me that question.
Have a happy-go-lucky float today!
